For the past several years, the basic story around Microsoft Fabric has been pretty straightforward: bring your data together in one place, transform and model it, then use Power BI to analyze and visualize it. The value proposition was centered on building a modern analytics platform that made it easier for people to understand their data.

More recently, the conversation has expanded beyond analytics. Microsoft has introduced a wave of AI capabilities that allow large language models to reason over enterprise data, moving users beyond traditional dashboards and toward conversational, AI-driven experiences. It's a significant evolution, but it's also setting the stage for something even bigger.

At Microsoft Build 2026, the story got a new chapter. Microsoft introduced Rayfin, an open source SDK and CLI that lets developers and coding agents define a full application backend in code and deploy it straight onto Fabric. That sounds like a developer tool announcement, and technically it is one. But the more useful way to read it is as a repositioning of what Fabric is for. Fabric was built to answer questions about your business. With Rayfin, it can also help you run your business.

This article looks at why Rayfin is more than another developer framework, how it turns Fabric from a data platform into a full application platform, and what that shift could mean for your business. More specifically, we'll look at how it brings transactional applications, analytical experiences, and AI agents into one workspace, where you can move from insight to action without ever leaving the screen.

One Workspace for Data, Transactions, and AI

Think about how your organization runs today. On one hand, you have a dizzying array of transactional apps: sales order entry, purchase orders, goods receipt posting, and everything else that lives in your ERP, CRM, and other line of business systems. On the other hand, you have analytics platforms like Fabric, where dashboards, reports, and KPIs help your team understand what's happening across the business.

These two worlds have traditionally stayed separate. One is where your team gets work done. The other is where they go to understand that work.

Add AI agents and the picture gets more complicated. An agent that's supposed to act on your business needs governed access to both your transactional state and your analytical context, and today that usually means a third integration project for your team to manage.

Rayfin breaks down the barriers between these systems. Because the application backend deploys directly into Fabric, its data lands in your OneLake by default, not a separate database you eventually have to sync. Your app inherits the same governance, security, and compliance rules already set up across your other Fabric workloads. There's no re-platforming step to make that data usable for your reporting or AI. It's already there.

A New Kind of Business Application

When an application and its analytics share the same data plane, the dashboard stops being the end of the conversation and becomes the beginning of the workflow.

Traditionally, business intelligence has been a destination. You open a dashboard, review the numbers, identify an issue or opportunity, and then leave that experience to take action somewhere else, maybe in an ERP system, a CRM application, or an email or Teams message. Every handoff introduces friction. Context gets lost, your team gets distracted, and the connection between insight and action starts to break down.

When your transactional application and your analytical experience are built on the same platform, that boundary begins to disappear. You can spot a trend, investigate the underlying data, launch a workflow, approve a recommendation, update a transaction, or engage an AI agent, all without leaving the application. Every action happens against the same governed data powering your analytics, which eliminates the synchronization headaches that come with stitching together multiple systems.

That's a fundamental change in what an analytical application can be for you. Instead of a read-only window into the business, your analytics become an active part of how work gets done. The dashboard isn't something your team checks once a week. It becomes a workspace they use throughout the day.

The Convergence of Work, Insight, and AI

Of course, Rayfin isn't creating this vision on its own. It's arriving alongside capabilities like Fabric IQ, Real-Time Intelligence, and Microsoft's growing portfolio of AI agents. Together, they're laying the foundation for a platform where your applications, your analytics, and your AI all operate against the same governed data instead of living as disconnected experiences.

That's what makes this shift significant for you. As noted above, most organizations today run three separate worlds: transactional applications where work gets done, analytical platforms where performance gets measured, and AI assistants increasingly asked to explain what's happening or recommend next steps. Connecting those worlds usually means layers of integrations, replicated data, and custom development your team has to keep in sync.

Microsoft is pursuing a different model. Instead of stitching together independent systems, your application, your dashboard, and your AI agent all become first-class citizens of the same platform. They share the same semantic models, the same governance and security layers, and the same real-time view of your business. Rather than moving data between systems, they simply interact with the same trusted foundation.

That also changes what "single pane of glass" means for you. Traditionally, the phrase described a dashboard that aggregated information from multiple systems: a single place to see what was happening, but not a place to do anything about it. Fabric's evolving architecture points toward something more useful: a single workspace where you can analyze information, execute business processes, and collaborate with AI without leaving the experience.

Microsoft's own Rayfin demonstrations illustrate this shift well. Rather than showing another dashboard, they showcase applications built directly on Fabric's semantic models while incorporating live operational data, such as Outlook calendars, digital twins, and other real-time information. The result is an experience that blends transactional workflows, governed analytics, and live business context into a single application.

Not long ago, delivering that kind of experience for your business would have required multiple products, custom integrations, and months of engineering effort. Rayfin changes that equation by removing the traditional tradeoff between developer agility and enterprise governance. From Data Platform to Experience Platform

If you've thought of Microsoft Fabric as the place your data lives and Power BI as the place you go to analyze it, Rayfin is worth a closer look. Rayfin and Fabric Apps are currently in public preview, and you'll understandably want to see how the platform matures before building mission-critical applications on it.

Even so, the direction is becoming clear. Microsoft isn't just expanding Fabric's analytical capabilities. It's positioning Fabric as a platform for building complete business experiences. The traditional boundary between the applications that run your business and the platforms that help you understand it is beginning to disappear.

That shift raises an important question for enterprise architects and technology leaders: Which business processes would be more effective if transactions, analytics, and AI all lived in the same experience? For many organizations, the answer won't be to replace their ERP or CRM. It will be to rethink the experiences that sit on top of them.

Closing Thoughts

Rayfin isn't just a faster way to stand up a backend. It's a structural shift in what a dashboard can be for you: a single screen where you act on the business, analyze it, and increasingly ask an agent about it, all grounded in the same governed data.

That's what "next generation" actually means here. Not flashier charts or a new coat of paint, but fewer walls between the systems you already run every day.
